Hair Colouring

How to choose a hair color that’s right for you

As we race to spring it’s not uncommon to think about changing up your look, and the easiest way to transform for the warmer weather is a fresh new color.

As far as current hair trends go, if you love [insert wild hair colour here], go for it! Gone are the days where every brunette booked in for balayage and every blonde asked for “just some extra highlights, thanks!” In 2022, bright pinks aren’t only invading our wardrobes, they’re dominating hair trends too – the same way those who aren’t naturally blonde are opting for platinum blonde colour. Meaning: if you want to update your look, any color you like is the right color for you!

But what if you’re looking for a color that suits your skin tone over your personality? Well, there’s a method for that…

Sounds strange, but it’s all in your veins

If you want to get accurate, a quick look at your veins can help pinpoint the hair hue that will suit your skin tone – and it’s one hair experts often refer to when trying to color match.

Simply put, blue-colored veins means you’ll suit cooler tones – like platinum blonde, rose gold and ash blonde – while green veins suggest a warmer, more yellow tone that will suit honey blonde and brown-ish shades.

But if you’re still feeling unsure…

Expert colorists even recommend pulling out your baby albums to get a clearer picture (pun intended) of what you will suit. Colorist to the stars, Michael Canale – the man responsible for Jennifer Aniston’s iconic ‘Rachel’ chop – told 9Honey Style looking to see if your hair had gold tones as a child is a great way to check your natural base, and work from there.

“Always work with the natural base color, so if it is a golden brown you are most likely to suit a golden highlight. If the skin is too yellow, you might want to do something to bring out the same in your undertones so it takes out the yellow skin,” he suggested.

But remember…

Whenever you’re coloring your hair – even if it’s just a regular root touch up – it’s important to look after the health of your hair by using quality hair care. Going blonde? Keep a bottle of TRESemmé Blonde Brilliance on hand to prevent going brassy and maintain high shine.
