10 Best Blow Dryer Brushes of 2022

Raise your hand if you’ve ever started blowing out your own hair only to want to quit midway because your arms are giving out. Holding up a blow dryer in one hand while using a brush in the other to straighten strands can be a struggle and requires a lot of patience, so it’s totally understandable if you’ve ever become frustrated during the process. But thanks to technological advancements and the development of blow dryer brushes, styling your tresses at home has never been easier.

As the name suggests, the hair styling tool is a blow dryer-meets-round brush that allows you to simultaneously dry, straighten, and even curl your hair in a matter of minutes. “A blow dryer brush can give you a consistent result in less time,” says Stephanie Johnson, a hairstylist and extension specialist at The Marie Robinson Salon in NYC. “Not only are you finally able to reach the back of your head but the results typically give a smoother look because it is designed to be used by someone that isn’t a professional.”

For a knockout, at-home blowout that rivals your hairstylist’s handiwork, here are the best hair dryer brushes that money can buy.

What should people look for in a blow dryer brush?

When searching for the best blow dryer brush, Johnson says there are three things you should keep in mind:

  • Barrel diameter: “If you are looking to achieve more volume and fullness go for a bigger size,” explains Johnson. “Choosing a smaller size is going to give more of a curl or wave.”
  • Heat Settings: According to Johnson, the best hair dryer brush should have several temperature control settings. “When you are starting out using a blowdryer brush keep the heat low,” says the pro. “You can gradually turn it up as you become better at using the tool.”
  • Bristles: “If you have coarse or long hair you should lean towards a brush with bristles that are more widely spread,” notes Johnson, while short, dense bristles are ideal for shorter hair.

Are blow dryer brushes damaging to hair?

Any hot tool that emits heat can be damaging to hair, but according to Johnson, “blow dryer brushes are definitely less damaging than any kind of flat iron because the heat is not direct on your hair, making it one of the safer styling tool choices .”

To help prevent any damage, Johnson first suggests investing in a great heat protectant for your hair. The pro also advises not to stay in one place on the hair for an extended period of time when using a hot tool. “The main rule of thumb is to always keep moving,” Johnson explains, adding that “if your blowdryer brush comes with a heat setting it is always best to keep that on low until you are pro!”

How to use a blow dryer brush

“The best way to use a blow dryer brush is by first starting with a heat protectant,” says Johnson. “Then brush thoroughly and let it air dry for a few minutes for best results.” Ideally, hair should be 50% dry before starting the styling process.

When you’re ready to style, Johnson notes that “the key to blow drying is always keeping things organized.” For best results, section your hair accordingly with clips, so you are able to just focus on the hair at hand. “Begin slowly but always continue moving so you don’t keep heat in the same area for too long of a time,” the pro explains. “Once you are finished with a section keep the dry hair separate from the wet.”
